The Downtown Streetcar will provide an attractive and exciting transit experience, linking activity centres in Vancouver's metropolitan core and integrated with other transit modes, SeaBus, SkyTrain, West Coast Express, and bus services, to further enhance the region's seamless transit network.

The Downtown Streetcar will also support the dramatic change in land use that is underway in Coal Harbour, False Creek North, Southeast False Creek, and the False Creek Flats. These neighbourhoods are developing with significantly higher densities that will require attractive and convenient public transit to create livable and sustainable communities.

Modern, Quiet, Safe, Comfortable

The Downtown Streetcar will demonstrate a modern version of electric streetcars, a unique mode of transit that has been established in other cities such as Portland, Oregon and Melbourne, Australia.

Modern streetcars provide a quiet, safe, and comfortable mode of transit with more interior space and larger open windows than buses. The Downtown Streetcar will also be wheelchair and bike-accessible.

Council approved proceeding with further work on planning for the Downtown Streetcar in 2004 including determining more accurate ridership estimates, both commuters as well as tourist and recreational users, and defining a more detailed layout plan for track location and operation.

A report back to Council on the on the findings of the Downtown Streetcar project update was completed in 2006.
